Gentle movement, greater mobility and a calmer mind
Yoga doesn't have to involve getting down onto a mat, complicated postures or being particularly flexible. Chair yoga makes the wonderful benefits of yoga accessible through gentle, supported movements that can be adapted to suit your body, mobility and individual needs. Using a chair as your foundation, you can explore a whole range of stretches, movements, breathing techniques and relaxation practices, without needing to get up and down from the floor.
Chair yoga is a wonderful way to improve flexibility, maintain joint mobility and build strength through gentle, mindful movement. The sequences encourage movement through the spine, shoulders, hips, arms and legs, helping to ease everyday stiffness and improve your awareness of how your body moves. Even relatively simple seated movements can help encourage circulation, improve posture and keep the body moving when standing exercises or traditional yoga postures feel less accessible.
One of the lovely things about chair yoga is that it meets you where you are. You don't need to be flexible, fit or experienced in yoga to begin. Whether you're returning to movement after a break, managing reduced mobility, finding traditional yoga challenging, or simply looking for a gentler way to exercise, chair yoga offers an opportunity to move at your own pace. The chair provides additional support and stability, allowing you to focus on the movements and enjoy the experience with greater confidence.
The benefits extend beyond the physical body. Emily’s classes in Surrey are friendly and many people make new friends and have a good laugh each week. Also, yoga is a mind-body practice, and the combination of gentle movement, conscious breathing and relaxation can have a wonderfully positive influence on how we feel. Taking time to slow down and become aware of your breath can help settle the nervous system, reduce feelings of stress and encourage a calmer, more balanced state of mind. Regular practice may also support better sleep, concentration and emotional wellbeing, helping you feel more connected to yourself and better equipped to navigate everyday life.
At Prittie Yoga, I also incorporate Energy Medicine techniques into my chair yoga sessions. These gentle practices draw on the body's energy systems and complement the physical movements and breathing techniques. Together, they create a more holistic approach to wellbeing, supporting vitality, relaxation and the body's natural regulatory processes.
